Is the Visco Elastic Foam Mattress Really Comfortable?

For those who don’t know yet, the memory foam – visco elastic mattress is made of – is simply polyurethane made with additional components that increase its density and viscosity. Developed as part of the NASA space program, it is now popular for civilian uses especially for those with medical conditions that require adequate back and neck support. Think sleep apnea patients and fibromyalgia sufferers and bed-ridden individuals.

Even healthy individuals with little to no back problems will benefit from the comfort provided by a visco elastic foam mattress. Said comfort levels are made possible due to two main reasons:

First, the memory foam is significantly denser than its traditional foam counterparts, even reaching 4.0 pounds per cubic foot in some models. The cells are spherical in shape to allow fast molding to the object – or individual, in your case – that exerts pressure on its surface.

As such, you will find that the memory foam is comfortable for the simple reason that your body, head and neck are cradled in a mattress that conforms to your body contours instead of going against it. Ultimately, you will not be tossing and turning in your sleep because no pressure points are created. You can choose from either higher density foam or lower density foam. For best results, you must practice lying down on the visco elastic foam mattress or using the pillow to determine which is best for your needs.

Second, the memory foam is highly sensitive to changes in temperature – human body temperature, to be exact about it. Within just a few minutes after exerting pressure on the memory foam, it will mold itself to your body contours. Again, this is a primary determinant of comfort in mattresses and pillows, which conventional products cannot provide.

Plus, there is also the fact that with warmer mattress and pillow supporting your body and head, you will feel more comfortable than, say, having literally cold bed products. Don’t worry about overheating though as the visco elastic foam mattress can maintain comfortable warmth where your body parts touch it. With such relatively high density and temperature sensitivity, other properties of the memory foam come to the fore. For one thing, it has longer memory that makes for longer recovery once the pressure is taken away. This means that the mattress and pillow provides for more time for your
body to adjust to a new position as well as new indentations on the bed products. For another thing, the use of the memory foam mattress mimics the sensations of weightlessness on Earth. Keep in mind that the memory foam was developed by NASA scientists so the comparison is justifiable.

This sense of weightlessness – or as some customers put it, sleeping in the bosom of clouds – is possible because almost 87 percent of the perceived gravitational forces exerted on the calves, knees, spine, back, shoulders, neck and head are eliminated. Thus, you can sleep more comfortably because, again, the unnecessary pressures on these body parts are removed. So, to answer the question of whether the visco elastic foam mattress comfortable, the answer is a resounding yes! You can sleep more soundly and peacefully with the memory mattress and pillow because of the above mentioned
properties.

However, you must never let a small infant and even a toddler use visco elastic foam mattress. Because of its ability to contour itself readily to the body, it can act as a suffocating agent.
